Overview

Doolee were engaged by Fortescue to construct a new gymnasium facility at the Pilbara Cloudbreak mine site. The gym is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, approximately 150km North of Newman (22.20 S / 119.25 E) within the East Pilbara Shire. The facility has an internal floor area of 1530m2 and includes the following main features;

  • 184m2 of studios space.
  • An indoor multipurpose sports court.
  • Heavy weight and gym area.
  • Sauna and ice shower facility.
  • Toilet and shower facilities.
  • Office and reception area.

Scope of work

  • Bulk Earthworks and quarrying of structural filling material.
  • All external service infrastructure including Electrical, Hydraulic and Civil stormwater.
  • Concrete supply and batching.
  • Concrete placement of footings and slab.
  • Supply and erection of structural steel.
  • Supply and installation of Bondor cladding.
  • Mechanical supply and installation of HVAC equipment and ducting.
  • Supply and installation of electrical distribution, communications, lighting, CCTV and dry fire.
  • Supply and installation of hot and cold water, sanitary service and fixtures.
  • Architectural fit out including joinery, floor finishes, indoor pitch and netting, loose furniture and fixtures and fittings.
  • External works including civil works, footpaths, fencing and rock pitching.
  • Testing, verification and commissioning.

Challenges

  • There was no nearby facility for concrete supply, a mobile concrete batching plant had to be set up to supply all the concrete requirements.
  • There was no nearby stockpile of structural filling, so all structural filling had to be quarried and transported to site.
  • The new project was in an existing mine site camp which can cause logistics issues for construction.
  • The site was a brown fields site which meant all existing services had to be located and verified prior to construction.
  • The flooring in the heavy weights section of the gym had multiple different set-downs in the concrete slabs to cater for a seamless floor finish between the different floor types.

Highlights

  • A concrete batching plant was mobilised and commissioned to supply 440m3 of concrete for the project.
  • Bulk earthworks and quarrying of 3200m3 of structural filling required wet and dry hire options across loaders, dump trucks and the mobile concrete batching plant.
  • The project was completed within 6 months of mobilising to site slightly ahead of the contract programme.
