Overview

Doolee were engaged by ARTC to perform protective coating repairs to Grady’s Creek Rail-bridge in the northern hunter region.

Scope of work

The scope of works for the bridges included to identify and rectify critical structural elements such as gusset plates and connections showing signs of corrosion across a single-span bridge structure.

Steelwork was assessed to identify and prioritise areas for coating repair. Agreed areas were then marked up for surface preparation.

Repair areas were prepared via mechanical means which included, needle-guns, die-grinders and bristle-blasters with vacuum attachments to contain dust.

A two-coat coating system was specified for the works which comprised of an aluminium impregnated surface tolerant high-build epoxy, followed by a surface tolerant MIO topcoat which was applied using conventional spray units.

Highlights

  • Works were carried out during track possession periods between daily train movements
  • Existing coating comprised of lead which was managed in accordance with relevant standards
  • Access to bridge structure was via suspended scaffold
  • Care was taken to ensure paint flakes were captured and did not enter the below waterway
  • As a result of the works the overall lifespan of the bridge structure has been protected and increased
